RCDP's History

In 1998, the founder of Rural Community Development Program-Nepal (RCDP-Nepal) was a young graduate student in the United States. In the beautiful mountainous city of Boulder, Colorado, he met Troy Paden, the owner and founder of goabroad.com. Inspired by Mr. Peden’s vision of volunteering abroad, RCDP-Nepal opened an office in Kathmandu, Nepal. Back then, the concept of volunteering in Nepal and India wasn’t even heard of. Therefore, we feel proud to be a pioneering volunteer travel organization. In 1998, RCDP was formally registered as an international volunteer program with the government of Nepal.

A wonderful success story – a recognized leader in volunteering abroad Nepal

Within a year of its establishment, nearly 100 enthusiastic volunteers from different part of the world joined RCDP-Nepal's programs. From the start, RCDP worked to provide programs that were organized and meaningful, offered dedicated service and always had safety of the volunteers in mind when offering programs in different parts of the country. As we became more experienced, we added programs that complimented other programs, like language and cultural immersion programs and other travel programs that took volunteers to the heart of the great Himalayan region of Nepal.

Through our programs, our volunteers have enjoyed our services and the hospitality of our staff. Because of this and our hard work, we've also grown into becoming a leading volunteering organization. Presently, RCDP-Nepal is a most respected and recognized organization in the field of volunteering in Nepal. Even though international and local volunteer organizations have mushroomed in Nepal, we still offer programs of highest quality at a very affordable price.

2001: Volunteer programs expanded to India, Tibet, and Sri Lanka

Thanks go to the Internet and email, and because of the growing requests of volunteers, we decided to expand our program into neighboring countries. In 2001, building on the outstanding success of RCDP programs in Nepal, we extended our programs in neighboring countries like India, Tibet (China), and Sri Lanka. Now, nearly 200 volunteers each year join our programs in India, Tibet, and Sri Lanka.

2008 - RCDP goes global, adding programs in Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Peru, Costa Rica and Ecuador

In recent years, many volunteering companies based in Thailand, New Zealand and India have taken advantage of the Internet and offered highly affordable international volunteering programs. Being one of the most experienced organizations offering volunteer abroad programs, we have decided to expand globally also and now offer our meaningful programs in Uganda, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Peru, Costa Rica and Ecuador.

While developing volunteering programs in Africa and Latin America, we have selected safe and culturally rich destinations where volunteers can make meaningful contributions, become immersed in the local culture, and get life changing experiences.

In 2008, we have traveled to these countries extensively to research and select the programs. In each destination, we have carefully selected the projects, host families, coordinating staffs and local support staffs. We have provided our staffs with extensive training so they are able to offer highly professional services while treating our volunteers with love and respect. We are proud of our coordinators, host families, host projects and staffs as all of them have at least four years of experience working with international volunteers. They are very committed to meeting your expectations, and we promise to deliver a professional service that will make your volunteer abroad experience a memorable journey.
