Teaching English in India

Despite rapidly growing economy, India still faces huge problems of unemployment and poverty. Millions of Indians are unemployed and English still remains one of the prominent factors to acquire a job. The opportunity to learn and study English is mostly available in expensive and private schools. Only the rich can afford to send their children to such schools. This situation has resulted in many poor and destitute people not getting well paid jobs and thereby resulting in their poor economic situation.

Volunteers participating in RCDP-India Volunteer program will offer their services to schools where street and deprived children study. As a volunteer, you will teach conversational English in such schools where the need of an English teacher is in high demanded. Teaching is a challenging and rewarding job. Volunteers will teach primarily on the outskirts of New Delhi. As the need for English proficiency is not limited to this area, our volunteers will focus deliberately in remote locations as well.

Your Activities as a Volunteer:

As a volunteer in English teaching project, you will work in deprived children community schools consisting both boys and girls from 5 to 14 years. The approximate class size of the class about 20 to 35 students. Volunteers may be asked to teach according to their capacities. Along with English lessons, you may teach other skills like computers and arts.

Most volunteers will teach English following the official curriculum. You may be asked by school authorities to develop your own projects to help students learn English. You can try to improve their conservation skills with questions and answers seasons and generally discussion about things happening in Delhi and the world.

Project skills required

Prior experience in teaching English is desired but not required. You’ll need to have sound communication skills in English. Volunteers should also be flexible, self-motivated and have a strong willingness to learn and take new initiatives.

Project Location

Delhi: Delhi one of the largest cities of India. It is also the capital of India. The city offers a fascinating amalgamation of old and the new north India with ancient temples and monuments mingling with posh shopping malls and international food chain. It’s also a city where you can find glittering buildings next to a shanty town.

Jaipur: Jaipur is the capital of Rajesthan and is known as the “pink city”. The city is truly an exotic and colorful place where people speak Rajesthani (Madwari) and Hindi. The city consist magnificent and majestic forts and palaces. The tour inside them will reveal the history of the Rajputs who ruled the city.

Arrangement of room/food/supervision

RCDP-India makes appropriate provision for food, room and supervision for its volunteers from the very beginning of their arrival to the country. During the first week of language and cultural immersion program, volunteers stay in RCDP's hostel in Gurgaon (Delhi) where cooks prepare a variety of Indian food (Nan, curry, Dal, chapatti, rice and pickle). During their volunteering programs in Delhi and Jaipur, volunteers stay in home base or project hostel or host family. Wherever, you stay RCDP India program offers you clean, simple, and safe accomodation and local foods 3 times a day. RCDP's staffs visit volunteers in their respective placement in every two- four week to acknowledge the feedback, volunteers' progress and the program in general.
