Makalu Base Camp Trek 21 Days

Are you planning a trek to the Makalu region in Nepal? Are you looking for the Makalu Base Camp Trek Itinerary?

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is a world-famous trekking adventure that begins at the humid plains of Tumlingtar and takes you to the base camp of Mt Makalu, passing through terraced landscapes, captivating rhododendron forests and Makalu Barun National Park.

The Makalu Base Camp trek offers you the grand opportunity to see Snow Leopards, Red Pandas, Himalayan Thar and the Spiny Babbler, the bird that can only be found in the Makalu Barun National Park. This Makalu Base Camp trek also offers you the chance to observe the stunning views of the south face of Mt. Makalu; Everest and Lhotse.

Makalu Base Camp Trek 21 Days Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Kathmandu

It is an exciting experience flying into Kathmandu on a clear day. You will be stunned by the exotic views of the snow-capped mountains. As soon as you land, our support team will pick you up at the airport and escort to your luxurious hotel. The rest of the day is reserved for rest.

Day 2: Fly Kathmandu - Tumlingtar [460m] & trek to Khandbari [1040m]

After an hour flight from Kathmandu, you arrive at Tumlingtar and begin your trek. You will hike north, towards Khadbari from Tumlingtar. You start by hiking for 45 minutes along a highland, after which the trail gradually climbs for around three hours to reach Khandbari camp.

Day 3: Trek to Fururu [1900m]

From Khadbari, you continue climbing up along the trail to the Mani Bhyanjyang hamlet. From here, the trail takes you through grasslands and bamboo woods to reach the Bhotebas village.

You then climb up to Chilchela from Bhotesbas village. After reaching Chilchela, you make several descents and ascents until you reach the Fururu village, where you will spend the night.

Day 4: Trek to Num [1490m]

Leaving Fururu village, you trek back to the ridge (1960m) and walk through rhododendron forests to a mani wall. After visiting the wall, You walk along the ridge to Mure village. From Mure village, the trail steeply descends, leading you to the Num village.

Day 5: Trek to Sedua [1460m]

From the Num village, you continue descending steeply through corn fields to Lumbang. From Lumbang, the trail drops sharply to a suspension bridge stretching over the Arun River. You then climb along the rocky path to Sedua.

Day 6: Trek to Tashi gaon [2070m]

From Sedua, you make a relatively simple ascent to Gyang. From Gyang, you make a mild walk-through terraced fields to Rupsia. From here, you pass through several streams and meadows, until you reach the Sherpa village of Tasi Gaon, the last permanent village of the valley.

Day 7: Trek to Kauma [3470m]

Leaving Tashi Gaon, you will make an ascent via a trail until you reach a small campsite. The path levels out here. You then climb to another Ridge called Chipla.

After Chipla, you pass two small creeks , while the trail leading to Kauma gets steeper and becomes a range of moss-covered rock stairways leading to Dhara Kharka. From here, you will climb a hill, then take a slight descent to reach Kauma.

Day 8: Trek to Mumbuk [3570m]

Today, you make a steep walk f to the summit of the ridge. You can see a large mani wall decorated with prayer flags here.

Then, make a gentle ascent to Kike La Pass. From the pass you traverse many ascents and descents, passing through lakes and dense rhododendron forests, until you reach Mumbak, a forest camp on a grassy slope.

Day 9: Trek to Nhe Kharka [3000m]

Leaving Mumbak, you climb around 500m and trek through fir forests. Walking along the deadly trail, you cross a 200m slide area, and then follow the river to Kharka.

You will reach Yangle Kharka after a short hike, then you climb to the north side of the Barun Khola to reach Nhe Kharka. There is a small gompa at the southern part of the valley that greets you with superb peak views in all directions.

Day 10: Trek to Sherson [4615m]

You follow the north bank of the Barun River until you cross a small wooden bridge and follow the trail that climbs gently to Ripok Kharka. Next, the trail crosses a stone chest and then climbs down.

From here, you can observe the stunning views of the Peaks, including Pyramid Peak, Chamling Peak and more. After walking for about 8 hours, you finally reach Sherson, where you will spend the night.

Day 11: Trek to Makalu Base camp [5000m]

From Sherson, you make a mild descent to a pass about 100m above Makalu Base Camp. Then, you climb down to a stream and cross over rocks to get to your base camp on the west bank of the river. The stunning views of the south face of Makalu can be observed from here.

Day 12: Rest day – Exploration

Today is a rest day for acclimatization and exploration.

Day 13: Trek to Nhe Kharka [3000m]

Today you repeat your steps down the Barun Valley and continue descending until you reach Nhe Kharka.

Day 14: Trek to Mumbuk [3570m]

From Nhe Kharka, you continue descending through the forests, making your way to Mumbuk. From here, you get to see the beautiful sunset views of Makalu and Chamlang.

Day 15: Trek to Kauma [3470m]

Today, you hike across the Shipton La and descend to Kauma.

Day 16: Trek to Tashi Gaon [2070m]

Leaving Kauma, you make a sharp descent back to Tashi Gaon and spend the rest of the day relaxing at Tashi Gaon in order to recover from the high elevation.

Day 17: Trek to Balung [760m]

From Tashi Gaon, you descend along the Kasuwa Khola Valley, making your way to Sedua. You then take a gentle descent to Mulgaon. The trail drops steeply to Ipsuwa Khola from Mulgaon.

After crossing the Ipsuwa River, you enter into the hot foot land of the Arun Valley. Passing the temporary villages used by Rai and Chettri farmers, you finally reach Balung.

Day 18: Trek to Pukuwa [550m]

From Balung, the path drops down to the Apsawa Khola. After crossing it, you climb sharply to Chhayang, a charming Rai village. You then trek up and down as the trails ascend and descends, until you reach Pukuwa.

Day 19: Trek to Bumling [370m]

Leaving Pukuwa, you follow the trail that descends to Tome through narrow tracks and lush forests. Below Tome, the Arun Valley gets wider and U shaped.

The trail then ascends a ridge on sharp rock steps. After reaching the top, you descend to a camp with panoramic views on the edge of the Sankhuwa Khola across the Bumling village.

Day 20: Trek to Tumlingtar [460m]

From Bumling, the 23 Days Makalu Base Camp Trek trail crisscrosses the fields of Bumling, taking you to Inkhuwa Khola.

From here, you take the trail that follows the river downstream to its meeting point with the Arun River. You then follow the east edge of the Arun River to Tumlingtar, passing through Chyawabesi.

Day 21: Fly to Kathmandu from Tumlingtar and transfer to hotel
