internship project abroad

You will work side by side with local people and experience Nepalese culture like never before. You will have boundless learning opportunities that offer a deeper perspective on the culture and local issues.

As an RCDP Internship participant, you will be placed in an internship related to your profession or area of interest while living with a warm and welcoming host family or in a secure volunteer hostel. It’s a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in Nepalese culture and gain real-world experience and knowledge.

Your placement is assigned according to your chosen area of focus, taking into account your skills and interests, the needs of the community, the duration of your program, your specific learning objectives, and the services and support you can provide to your partner program. It is designed to provide a meaningful opportunity for you to work at the community level, build knowledge about your area of interest, and achieve your learning objectives. Most of the time, the project director will help you complete your field report. Participants will be given a Certificate of Completion at the end of the program, and most employers will be happy to write a letter of recommendation upon request. Previous experience in your area of study is highly recommended, and previous foreign travel is desirable but not required.

Internship programs in Nepal are typically available for 2–12 weeks throughout the year. You may choose the dates of your program. Dates and duration are subject to availability, but RCDP will work with you to accommodate your needs. To get the most out of your internship position in Nepal, RCDP suggests taking a one-week language and culture program. The program will provide you with a necessary and comprehensive start.

Why Choose the Internship Program in Nepal with RCDP?

Choosing an internship with RCDP Nepal means combining meaningful work with genuine cultural immersion. With over two decades of experience in volunteer and internship coordination, RCDP partners with reputable local organizations, schools, and health centers to ensure that every placement is safe, well-structured, and impactful.

Interns receive personalized support from our dedicated in-country team — from airport pickup and orientation to accommodation and supervision throughout their stay. Whether you’re teaching, assisting in healthcare, writing reports, or documenting stories through photography, you’ll gain hands-on experience while making a real contribution to local communities.

Volunteers Responsibilities

Interns with RCDP Nepal engage in meaningful, hands-on work that creates a lasting impact in local communities. Depending on your chosen program, you may assist teachers in classrooms, support daily care in childcare centers, help medical teams in clinics, or teach English to monks in monasteries. Those joining the Photojournalism, Language and Culture, or Report Writing internships will focus on storytelling, cultural immersion, and documenting community initiatives. Throughout your experience, you’ll collaborate with local professionals, adapt to new environments, and develop valuable skills — all while contributing to positive social change in Nepal.

Skills & Qualifications

The Internship Program in Nepal welcomes individuals who are eager to learn, adapt, and make a meaningful contribution. While no specific qualifications are required for most fields, participants should have a genuine interest in cultural exchange and community service. Interns are expected to be flexible, proactive, and open-minded as they work closely with local teams and professionals.

For those applying to the Healthcare Internship, participants must be at least a first-year medical or nursing student (or have a relevant academic or clinical background) to ensure appropriate engagement in medical-related activities. This program offers a valuable opportunity to gain meaningful experience, develop practical skills, and grow both personally and professionally in a supportive environment.

Intern Schedule

During your internship in Nepal, you will have the chance to gain meaningful experience while immersing yourself in the local culture and community. Each placement follows a flexible schedule that may vary depending on the type of project, your role, and the location. Interns typically work alongside local professionals, staff, and community members, contributing to daily tasks and learning through direct participation.

While the exact hours depend on your specific program, most interns engage in meaningful work for 4–6 hours per day, Monday to Friday, with evenings and weekends free to explore Nepal’s stunning heritage, temples, and natural beauty.

Sample Daily Schedule:

  • 7:30 AM – 8:30 AM : Enjoy breakfast and prepare for your internship activities.
  • 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Participate in your assigned project — this may include teaching, assisting in healthcare settings, community work, or research tasks.
  • 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM: Lunch break and rest.
  • 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Continue with internship duties, assist with reports, or shadow professionals in your field.
  • Evening: Free time to relax, reflect on the day, or explore the city with fellow interns.

Interns are encouraged to remain flexible, as daily activities can vary based on community needs, local events, or project priorities. Regardless of your placement, every day offers an opportunity to learn, grow, and make a lasting impact.

The Start Dates

RCDP Nepal programs begin on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month and are available all year round. However, we allow flexibility if you have travel constraints.

Fees

Every year, hundreds of volunteers and interns from UK- and USA-based organizations spend up to $2,500 for a 2-week program in Nepal. However, RCDP offers the most affordable volunteer program, with fees starting as low as $150. The program fee is divided into a registration fee ($279) and a weekly fee.

In addition to volunteer and internship programs, RCDP runs multiple projects supporting poor children and orphanages. We currently manage one orphanage and conduct school construction and renovation programs (for details, visit: RCDP Achievements). The majority of your program fee is used directly for your program, and any remaining funds help support these community projects and orphanages.

The weekly fee is typically divided as follows: 50% for room and three local meals per day, and 50% for project support and local staff. Allocation may vary depending on the location or project type, but your program coordinator will explain these details before payment.
