Volunteer Responsibilities & Impacts

While volunteering in Nepal orphanage program, you will work to better the lives of the children by caring for them and teaching them. You will have the opportunity to teach conversational English and conduct creative programs, learning workshops, fun & games and impart health education.

You can also share your valuable skills. If you are skilled in painting, art & crafts, music, dance and computing, you can also teach these skills to the children as well. During your volunteer work, you will care for the children and ensure that they eat well, sleep well, wash and change into cleaner clothes. This is a vital aspect as the love and the care that you provide will make them feel loved and vanquish any mental disturbance.

When you Volunteer Orphanage Nepal you can also become actively involved in fundraising. You can also help the administration and be part of cleaning campaigns.

Skills & Qualifications

You do not need any specific skills and qualifications. However, you should be flexible, practical, self-motivated and open-minded to learn new culture. You should also be enthusiastic about working with children.

While volunteering in Kathmandu and Chitwan orphanage, you must be at least 18 years of old to volunteer on your own. If you are at least 16 years you can volunteer with a parental consent. If you are below 16 years you will need to be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian.

For the orphanage program you must also provide a police certificate stating that you do not have a criminal background.

Volunteer Schedule

While volunteering in Nepal orphanage program, your duties and schedule may vary depending on the needs of the orphanages. You should however be prepared to help with a lot of different activities. You are also expected to arrive a day before the program start date at the project site.

The sample schedule is as follows:

First Day: During the first day, your country coordinator will accompany you to the orphanage and introduce you the local staff, children and duties at the orphanage. During the day, you can familiarize yourself with the children and the orphanage, and be prepared for duties the next day.

Weekdays: Your Nepal orphanage volunteer program duties will start on the second day. A typical weekday will look like this:

  • 7.00 AM – Breakfast will be served to the volunteers.
  • 7.30 AM - 9.00 AM – You will help the kids get ready for school, serve them breakfast and accompany them to school.
  • 10.00 AM - 3.00 PM – You will have free time to explore around and conduct general duties at the orphanage and administrative works
  • 3.30 PM – You will accompany the kids from the school back to the orphanage.
  • 4.00 PM –You will get snacks ready for the children at the orphanage.
  • 4.00 AM - 6.30 PM – You will work with the children, help with homework, conduct fun activities etc.
  • 7.00 PM– You will help prepare Dinner and have Dinner with the children.

Program Dates

RCDP Volunteer Orphanage Nepal begins every Monday all year round. However, we allow for flexibility if you have travel constraints.

Program Fees

RCDP offers the most affordable program fees for volunteer opportunities in Nepal. The program fee is divided into 2 parts: A one-time registration fee of $299 and weekly Program fee that depends on the duration of volunteering. The Registration fee covers for administration costs and the Weekly Program Fees cover Project contribution, Accommodation and Meals.

Accommodation & Food

During your Nepal volunteering work, RCDP is responsible for looking after the accommodation and the meal of the volunteers. You will with stay with a host family or in a volunteer hostel during their program. You may have to share a room with a volunteer of the same gender. Bathroom and other facilities are usually shared.

RCDP’s host families in Nepal are well screened and they are socially respected. The family will offer you a safe and secure place to stay. Staying with a host family is a wonderful way to immersion in a local culture. Usually, at least one member of the host family will be able to speak in English.

Volunteer orphanage Nepal will be provided with three local Nepalese meals per day- breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you have a dietary requirement your host family will be able to accommodate that. Like the country, the people and the culture, the food in Nepal is also reflects different influences that have amalgamated in Nepal from nearby reason. Rice and lentil soup with vegetable curry is a stable food for most families and is consumed daily.

Free Time and Weekend Exploration

While in Nepal you will have enough time to explore. You will work for 4-5 hours, from Monday to Friday, leaving you plenty of time during the week to check local places around you and experience diverse culture and understand their history. Over the weekend you will be able to travel far across the country exploring the temples or hike in the mountains.

Safety and in Country Support

Nepal is an absolutely safe country to travel and the people are friendly to tourists. Volunteers will be provided with pre-departure support. After your arrival in the country, our local coordinator will be there to pick you up from the airport and guide you during your entire volunteering duration.

Our local coordinator lives close to the project site and you'll have access to his mobile phone number. RCDP’s customer service staff will also constantly monitor your progress and inquire if you're happy with the program or not. We do advise our volunteers to respect the local culture and display sound judgment.

FAQs

Arrival and Departure

You will be required to arrive at least a day before the program start date at the “Tribhuvan International Airport” in Kathmandu. RCDP local staff will be there to meet you at the airport and will transfer you to our volunteer hostel for overnight stay. The next day, you will be transferred to your host family and the Nepal orphanage volunteer project site. RCDP does not provide airport drop-up service. However, you can always take the help of the local staffs to book a taxi back to the airport.

Visa

To volunteer orphanage Nepal, you will need to apply for a tourist visa. Majority of the nationalities are able to obtain a tourist visa upon arrival in Nepal at the airport. For nationalities not eligible to obtain a visa on arrival, you need to apply for a visa at the Nepal Embassy or Nepalese Diplomatic Mission in your country. Vaccination

Please take the advice of your doctor for the vaccinations before you volunteer in Nepal. Also, take proper precautions during your stay in Nepal.

Recommended vaccines for travelers to Nepal include: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Rabies, Malaria, Yellow fever and Japanese Encephalitis in addition to routine vaccines - MMR, DPT, Chicken pox, Polio and yearly Flu shots.

Project Location

Nepal orphanage volunteering program is available in two locations currently: Kathmandu and Chitwan. Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal located in valley famous for its rich culture and history and nightlife. Chitwan is a flat land located 5-6 hours away from Kathmandu. Chitwan is famous for its National park with rich and diverse wildlife and indigenous Tharu community. Volunteers for Chitwan will be provided with transportation in a tourist bus to the project site.
